DR. Mariel Pettee

Dr. Mariel Pettee is a scientist and performing artist based in Brooklyn, NY. As a postdoctoral fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a visiting researcher at the Flatiron Institute Center for Computational Astrophysics, she develops AI models that help enable new discoveries in high-energy particle physics and astrophysics. As one of the pioneers of AI-generated choreography in recent years, she has led multiple teams of interdisciplinary researchers to develop state-of-the-art AI models trained on her own movements. These models have infused her recent creative practice in pieces such as Mirror Exercise (2020), an AI-generated duet with herself, and mememormee (2023), a live dance performance exploring the prismatic effects of AI-enabled artmaking on anyone with a moving body.
